How to Play 7 Card Stud Hi Lo Like 7 Card Stud, you receive 2 cards face down then 4 up cards with the 7th card being dealt face down. At showdown, you will use any combination of your 7 cards to make up a high hand and/or a low hand. It is possible for you to win both the high and the low pot with a different combination of cards. Of the five cards used in a low hand, an 8 is the highest-ranking card you can use...as is why it's commonly called ‘8 or better'. The lowest high card determines the best low hand. If two or more players have the same high card, then the next lowest high card is used. Take a look at this example:
At showdown - PlayerX holds 8, 7, 5, 3, 2 and PlayerY holds 8, 7, 5, and 4, Ace.
Some may look at this and think that Y has the winning low hand because the lowest card, an Ace, is held. This is incorrect. Player X holds the winning hand. If you refer to the paragraph above, the “lowest high card…then the next lowest high card” determines ranking. So in ranking these two hands 8,7,5 is held in common with the next lowest card being a 3. Therefore, playerX holds the best low hand.
A Straight or a Flush is not considered a low hand even if it contains all cards with an individual rank of 8 or lower. The one exception to this is considered the best low hand – Ace, 2, 3, 4, 5. This is also considered as a straight for high, and both pots may be won with this hand.
The action for 7Card Stud hi-lo is very much like other stud games.
ANTE You like all other players must ante before any cards are dealt. The amount of the ante reflects that table limits…the lower the limit, the lower the ante. $0.50/$1.00 tables have no ante, $10.00/$20.00 tables have a $1.00 ante.
BETTING You are dealt two down cards, hole cards, and one up card. The player showing the lowest card by suit (highest - spades, hearts, diamonds, clubs – lowest) must bring-in the first round of betting with a forced bet of half the lower limit. You wont have to worry much about who goes first etc, the software will prompt the player who is to begin the betting. After the initial bet, three more up cards are delivered (with a round of betting after each card), then a final down card and a final round of betting.
Betting Structure - Our software enforces the betting limits. The stakes being offered at the particular table determines the limit or maximum bet on any player's turn. For example, at a $1-$2 table, the limit on any bet is $1 on the first two betting rounds and $2 on the final three betting rounds. We allow one bet and 3 raises in our card room. The final raise is capped and the only options you have are to call or fold at this point.
The action of the first two rounds is set at the lower limit of the table structure. The exception of this rule is when a player shows a pair after the 4th street. All players have the option to bet the higher limit for the second round of betting. If a player does bet the higher limit, subsequent bets must also be at the higher limit.
THE SHOWDOWN The first person to show their hand is the last person to show strength with a bet or raise. The pot is split between the highest hand and the best qualifying low hand. If no qualifying low hand exists, the full amount of the pot is awarded to the highest hand. Both the high and low hands can consist of any combination of the 7 cards you have available. Should multiple hands tie, the pot is split with any odd amount going to the player closest to the ‘D' button's left.
Remember: It's possible for you to win both the high pot and the low pot.
It is important to note that our 7 Card Stud tables allow 8 players to be seated. In the unlikely event that all 8 players are still in the hand on the river, the total number of cards needed for all the players to receive their own card would not be available in a standard deck of cards. In this case the river card is dealt face up on the table and it will be used as a community card. Click here to download our multiplayer online poker games and tournaments.
